Cloud: When It Is Useful

Cloud offerings abound on the market, with a wealth of offers and sometimes embarrassing prices, but what are the fundamental differences, and what makes the difference? For some years now, the word cloud, in its various endings, has been present in the vocabulary of anyone involved in IT issues; in recent years, also thanks to a greater diffusion of fast connectivity, the market for this type of service has exploded.

The suppliers of this type of service are many, with different characteristics and prices. They are offers that would need a platoon of IT engineers and probably a few months to be evaluated in their entirety. Still, we wanted to summarize the suggestions into macro categories. We could divide them into three large families:

  1. historical archiving of backup documents
  2. creation of disaster recovery tools
  3. creation of services external to the company

Cloud, When It’s Useful

If we consider the services offered by the big internet players (Amazon, Google), we can find solutions for all the families mentioned above, with minimal price differences for the same type of services; sometimes with accessories that are appreciable (Amazon’s Glacier allows historical archiving with ridiculous costs per gigabyte as long as you can wait a few days for them to be made available to the user) think of the universe created by Google with emails, documents, maps and an invasive system that arrives on your smartphone or tablet in the guise of Android that allows total integration and continuity of use of the services above anywhere.

But there are smaller realities, perhaps national ones, which offer quality and performances that make the difference in particular situations. It is then necessary to deal with the connectivity that our providers make available to us. In recent years many areas have been covered by Fiber connectivity that allows wider bands than the previous ADSL but remains asymmetrical and, in any case, with nominal bands. Very different from what is available. Last but not least is to decide what is vital for us to keep, in every situation, accessible and what can be achieved, perhaps over a more extended period.

A partner company (core tech) that has been working for years alongside the best software and service providers around the internet galaxy proposes a hybrid on-cloud and on-premises solution for all primary related primary services, for example, email, firewalls, VoIP telephone exchanges. The solution exploits the strengths of both solutions while minimizing the weaknesses. The primary example of this activity is the archiving of corporate email. As everyone will have had the opportunity to see, the volume of messages we end up or receive increases exponentially yearly.

For convenience or laziness, we use the various clients as archiving systems, global of our information. However capable, our hard disks and efficient email programs have limitations. The first is undoubtedly the “fragility” of the system on which they are installed, damage to the hard disk, or the program that “decides” to crash. Perhaps by ruining the file he writes, his data and years of information are irretrievably lost! It could be objected that backing up the data on another medium guarantees good reliability.

Still, even in this case, it is necessary at least consistency in executing it and, in any case, a certain amount of time of unavailability in case an entire backup needs to be restored. Much simpler and safer to draw on an on-cloud service that automatically allows you to draw on your messages at the source as soon as they arrive, which helps a consultation of the archive itself from any internet access with an extremely search engine. Assertive, which finally allows the reconstruction of your library on your PC. The Mail @ archive product allows all this with decidedly reduced costs compared to building a backup infrastructure and maintaining it on your own.

The saving of data, however, is not limited to email only. To safeguard your files on the PC and the server, there is a tailor-made product tailored to your needs and specifications for each system or application. 1Backup is the product that completely solves remote backup needs for files and applications and entire virtual machines. The specificity of the archiving process also allows for extreme cost optimization and complete control over what is done.
